Delight in the traditional dishes served at the well-known local kafenion or drink a raki or cold beer at the nearby taverna. The sandy beaches of Almirida, Kera, and Kalyves, with numerous shopping opportunities, taverns, restaurants and cafes are in the near vicinity.
"Douliana" is 25km from Chania, 2km from the beach of Kera and Almirida. It is - a little sapphire - up in the hill surrounded by the green of olive trees, vineyards, carobs, herbs and wild flowers. It is well hidden from mainstream tourism and it does not offer only sun, sand and sea.
Douliana, is the ideal traditional village for people who want to escape in order to relax and have quality for their vacations. Walking in the narrow streets, enjoying the old stone-built houses, drinking "tsikoudia" or local wine after swimming at the beach and in the evening staring the stars ...
A unique peaceful village viewing the White Mountains and the blue of the sea takes you to the past thinking that you are somewhere that does not exist any more, like a lost paradise.
Douliana, has been awarded protected village status, and deemed by many connoisseurs to be the most beautiful village in the Apokoronas area, is situated a mere 30 minutes drive from the towns of Chania and Rethymnon .
The footpaths to and between Gavalochori, Tsivaras, Kalives, Kera and Almirida provide an excellent opportunity to undertake leisurely walks. The more energetic guests will find more challenging hikes are also within easy reach. Andreas and Vasso Lourakis created their little world literally with their own bare hands.
The little village of Douliana, Andrea's parents' village, was for them and their children, Natalia and Constantinos, a dream vacation destination for years.
Their wish to make it their home was granted in the year 2000 when they left Athens and moved to Crete for good.
Andreas & Vasso built their house along with another four self contained accommodations using traditional materials and techniques not sparing time and energy, choosing carefully each stone or piece of cypress wood, local always, to be put in the buildings incorporating their favorite architectural details from Venetian and Turkish ruins in the area. Andreas built and Vaso was in charge of the aesthetics and the final touches.
They created a family run business of guesthouses that can accommodate a maximum of fifteen all year round and called it "Natalia’s houses".
The Lourakis family doesn't work with intermediaries, or package deals are not interested in mass tourism practices and they value person to person contact.
Their dream having come true, they savor the pleasures of mellow country life and share them with their guests.
As Douliana has been conferred the status of protected village, Andrea's and Vasso's reverence and conservation of the rural environment and traditional culture have earned them an agrotourism certification.
Their respect for the past and attention to detail led to a whole lot of salvaging of modest rural utensils and objects from yester year.
Most fabrics in the houses are hand made in the village or hand embroidered by Vasso who also runs the small grocery store adjacent to the houses and lovingly prepares the meals upon request.
She has also equipped each house with care so that her guests depending on their mood can opt for peace, tranquility and total independence or conversation and companionship, the bustle of flavors of her kitchen, her organic olive oil, music and wine and hands-on experience of daily activities such as bread making or embroidery. Guests are treated as part of the Lourakis extended family.
The "controlled isolation" of the village, so far and so close from the heart of the coastal strip, the soothing view of the olive groves and the White Mountains enjoyed from the windows and terraces of Natalia's Houses, their charm and comfort, the human qualities of the hosts, who share what they cherish most, have already won them a faithful clientele and quite a few great friendships.
